Lawrence Livermore Lab and NASA Astronomers photograph Planets from another Solar System

In two separate studies, astronomers from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and NASA have published the first photographs ever of not just one, but FOUR planets from outside our solar system in the journal Science Express.  Don’t pack your bags just yet.  None of the planets is even remotely habitable.

The Team from Livermore accomplished their feat using the Keck and Gemini North Telescopes on the top of Mount Mauna Kea in Hawaii.  By studying the host star HR8799, they were able to photograph 3 of the 4 new planets.

The NASA team used the Hubble telescope to take their picture of fourth planet, Fomalhaut b, which orbits the star named Fomalhaut.  At only 25 light years from Earth, the Fomalhauts are practically next door neighbors.

A quick check of the Extra Solar Planets Encyclopedia tells us that our 4 new discoveries are the 323rd, 324th, 325th, and 326th planets outside of the solar system to be discovered.
