The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) began operations 50 years ago today, on October 1st, 1958. Happy Anniversary NASA! The agency was created in response to the Russian launches of Sputnik I and Sputnik II. Since that time, it has been the world’s leading force in human spaceflight, robotic spaceflight, and aeronautics research. Successful programs of the agency include the Mercury manned space flights, the Apollo manned flights to the moon, the Space Shuttles, the Hubble Telescope, the International Space Station, and the robotic exploration of Mars with missions like the Phoenix Lander.

Even Space Explorers need help finding their way in a dark hallway. Get your Celestial Nightlight at Kyle Design.
The agency celebrated its golden anniversary with an early party on September 24th at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va. Clearly Paulano’s invitation was lost in the mail.
Perhaps as a way to make it up, NASA’s Exploration Experience Trailer will be swinging by some of my old haunts in the Midwest. They will be at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota on October 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Then after a quick trip to Minneapolis and Duluth, they will be in Watertown, SD for South Dakota Space Day on October 16th and 17th. The trailer is a travelling museum and educational center, and focuses space exploration. Check local listings for exact times. Among other highlights, attendees get to touch a Moon Rock.
NASA isn’t the only 50th Anniversary Celebrant in 2008. There are many others. Apparently 1958 was a busy year. Jack St. Clair Kilby invented the integrated circuit, Joao Gilberto developed and recorded the Bossa Nova beat in Rio de Janeiro, the first International House of Pancakes opened in California, the nuclear powered submarine U.S.S Nautilus crossed beneath the North Pole, and Alaska, the object of Vladimir Putin‘s desire, was admitted to the union.

In the movies, it wasn’t the Bridge to Nowhere, but rather the Bridge on the River Kwai that was getting the Oscar nod 50 years ago for Best Picture. Alec Guinness was Best Actor, and Joanne Woodward, wife of Paul Newman, was named Best Actress for her work in The Three Faces of Eve.
