Dude, Where’s My Pyramid?

Egyptian Theme Gift, Egyptian Business Card HolderArchaeologists in Egypt announced the re-discovery of an ancient 4400 year old pyramid on Thursday. The Pyramid is believed to have been built by King Menkauhor of the Fifth Dynasty in about 2400 BC. It was originally discovered by German Archaeologist Karl Richard Lepsius in 1842. Somehow, between expeditions, sand covered Lepsius’s discovery, and no one ever found it until this year. Fun fact to know and tell – Lepsius is the guy who coined the phrase Totenbuch. Almost every Mummy Movie ever made references the English translation: Book of the Dead.

It wasn’t until recently that Egyptian Antiquities Czar Zahi Hawass and his team of archaeologists removed a 25-foot mound of sand in order to find King Menkauhor’s wayward Pyramid, located near Memphis. So far, no word on whether the King has left the building, (i.e. whether the King’s body has been found) but the burial chamber has been found. Hawass’s team is scouring the site for inscriptions that will support their current theories regarding the pyramid’s age and origin.

Presuming there are inscriptions to be found, they are certain to be written with ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs, a written language that relies on pictures and representations. Thanks to the Rosetta Stone, scholars are now able to translate the meanings of these pictures into modern languages. Conversely, for scholars with a lot of time to spare, they can now restate modern thoughts in the form of hieroglyphs.
